2024 DECO Clay Craft Academy Newsletter

We would like to extend our heartfelt New Year’s greetings from Hawaii to all of you.

Last year was a year filled with activities, including filming lessons, publishing a new book, and holding classes to name a few. It has been wonderful to welcome instructors and other customers who visit the Big Island of Hawaii. With our new brand “byDECO” at the Banyan Bridge location, we have had many opportunities to introduce DECO clay at workshops in collaboration with local artists and share the DECO culture here.

In August, we photographed my new book at several homes and in the studio. The focus of this book is on botanicals with a theme of “interior decorative clay works for the home and incorporate clay works of art into your daily life”. Many months of intense work were needed to complete this monumental task.

This was the first time we had displayed clay works on such a large scale. Each clay piece was created especially for the space to be placed as a focal element. Each space was linked with a theme, I then matched the works to the space. This was a completely different approach than what I have done in the past when creating clay works.

During this process, I had the opportunity to collaborate with many talented local artists who work in wood and ceramics. With their help, we were able to customize the look and feel of the shelving, backdrops, frames, and vessels to match each piece.

All photography was taken using just the natural light from the Hawaiian sky. Due to needing the right shades and strength of light three full days of photography and staging work were required.

With great teamwork, we were able to complete the project successfully while feeling the freshness of creating work that we were all proud of. The air was electric with enthusiasm and creativity. This new book, Clay Art Botanical Interior, has been finished and is now in the hands of the printers in Japan. I’m looking forward to getting my hands on it!

We continue to hold classes on Oahu as often as possible while also beginning to hold workshops on the Big Island of Hawaii. Our CLAYCRAFT by DECO products are now available at our local home store where we gladly hold demonstrations. One of the pleasures is interacting with the people who pass by and seeing the amazement that comes from these handmade crafts.

We are gearing up to start a kid’s program for local children and a deco curriculum at our Hawaii studio this year as well. It is our joy to have the opportunity to interact with overseas instructors, introduce new classes, and hold frequent meetings via Zoom, etc. I sincerely hope that I will be able to meet all the overseas instructors in person this year.

We hope this year will be a wonderful year for you all!
